Ways to Romanticize Your Summer Kitchen
Small rituals. Fresh herbs. Chilled plates. And the quiet joy of a table set just for you.
Summer asks you to slow down. The kitchen becomes less about the recipe and more about how the moment feels. These are a few ways I bring intention into the everyday, nothing fancy, just soft beauty layered into what’s already here.
Keep herbs in a glass of water
They last longer this way. But more than that, they make the space feel alive. Place a few stems in a jar on the counter basil, parsley, thyme. Let them lean and root and curl however they want. It's storage that looks like still life.
Chill your salad plates
Store a couple of plates in the fridge and pull them out before serving anything cold. Even a pile of greens feels deliberate when it lands on chilled ceramic. That little contrast of temperature feels like someone thought it through even if it was just you, five minutes ago.
Make summer butter
Compound butter is one of the easiest ways to infuse flavor without effort. Make a batch and keep it ready for everything from toast to grilled corn to seared vegetables.
• 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
• Zest of 1 lemon
• 2 tablespoons chopped herbs (parsley, thyme, basil)
• Pinch of chili flakes
• Small pinch of sea salt
Stir everything together in a small bowl until smooth and combined. Spoon onto a piece of parchment and roll into a log. Chill until firm, then slice as needed.
Keep fresh flowers nearby
A few clippings from outside are enough. No bouquet required. Let the stems bend. Let a few petals fall. A mason jar on the windowsill does more for a room than most centerpieces ever will.
Set the table
Even if it’s just you. Especially if it’s just you. One plate. A linen napkin. A taper candle if the mood’s right. The act of setting it is part of the meal not extra, not for show. Just yours.
Play music while you cook
Put on something that shifts the tone of the room. French jazz. Old Dolly. A record you forgot you loved. It’s not about filling the silence — it’s about giving the moment a little soundtrack of its own.
